Clinimetrics in stroke research.

چکیده
WHAT distinguishes clinical medicine from biomedicine? Most physicians would probably agree that in their daily clinical work they rely not only on biomedical but also on humane qualities. Many patients express a concern that the humanistic aspects of medicine are overshadowed by mechanistic ideas, which they feel have come to dominate much of the medical community. At the same time, there is little doubt among physicians and laymen that the contributions of biomedicine to medical care have been most impressive and fruitful. To phrase it in biological terms, clinical medicine and biomedicine do not act as competitive inhibitors; instead, they exert synergistic effects. Why is it that biomedicine has come to dominate clinical medicine? Even if medical care is influenced by a great number of external factors, scientific development is unquestionably a major determinant. In the scientific sphere, the proliferation and quality of biomedicine has been so overwhelming that it has ruled much of the recent development of clinical medicine.

Clinimetrics in rehabilitation medicine: current issues in developing and applying measurement instruments 1.
Clinimetrics in rehabilitation medicine, i.e. the field of developing, evaluating and applying measurement instruments, has undergone considerable progress. Despite this progress, however, several issues remain. These include: (i) selection of an instrument out of the wide range available; (ii) using an instrument in a variety of diagnostic groups; (iii) using an instrument in individual patien...
متن کاملTest validation in sport physiology: lessons learned from clinimetrics.
We propose that physiological and performance tests used in sport science research and professional practice should be developed following a rigorous validation process, as is done in other scientific fields, such as clinimetrics, an area of research that focuses on the quality of clinical measurement and uses methods derived from psychometrics. In this commentary, we briefly review some of the...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Robust measures of functional outcome are required to determine treatment effects in stroke trials. Of the various measures available, the Barthel index (BI) is one of the more prevalent. We aimed to describe validity, reliability, and responsiveness (clinimetric properties) of the BI in stroke trials. METHODS Narrative review of published articles describing clinimetri...
